In the context of continuous promotion and connotation enrichment of the Belt and Road Initiative, President Xi Jinping proposed in 2017 to support the development of the “Air Silk Road,” which enriched the strategic concept of the Belt and Road Initiative and pointed out a new direction for the development of China’s aviation industry.
To promote the “Air Silk Road” construction, the Air Silk Road International Forum (ASRIF) Committee was established in 2019. In May 2019, the 1st ASRIF made its debut as one of the core forums of the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS). At the 1st ASRIF, the ASRIF committee coordinated with several international organizations, foreign and domestic airlines, airports, and other units and jointly launched the Air Silk Road International Cooperative Alliance. This marked a significant advancement in international cooperation under the framework of the “Air Silk Road.”
The ASRIF, as a core forum of the CIFTIS focusing on civil aviation and the Belt and Road Initiative cooperation, has successfully held for four sessions (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022), and has been selected as the “Best Conference Event” by the CIFTIS organizing committee twice. It has facilitated various summit achievements, including the establishment of the ASRICA, the cooperation agreements between Beijing and Belarus, and the Zambia Aerotropolis Economic Zone, the annual release of the “Development Index Report on China’s Airport Economy” and “Development Index Report on China’s Aviation Logistics Hubs” for four consecutive years, as well as signing multiple projects related to the “Air Silk Road” international collaboration.
2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative and is also a crucial year for the recovery of the civil aviation industry after the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2023 forum will focus on specific topics centered around the aviation industry’s recovery, international collaboration, green development, and digitization. It will invite guests from domestic and international government, industry, academia, and research sectors to advance the development of the “Air Silk Road.”
